Mycobacterial phage “Friarpreacher”

Dear Reader,

Father Nic Austriaco, a Dominican professor of biology at Providence College in Rhode Island, has recently classified a new mycobacterial phage (essentially a new type of virus that infects certain types of bacteria); he has named it “friarpreacher.” He decided to post about his new discovery on Facebook. Little did he know who was watching.

Ah, “how beautiful the long fibrous tails of the bacteriophages that preach the good news!” (kind-of-like Isaiah 52:7).

You can visit Fr. Nic’s faculty page here.

If you are unfamiliar with the reference to Bl. Jane, go here.

We Dominicans always want more scientists in our Order. If you feel you have a call to religious life AND want to engage in the study of God’s wonderful creation, feel free to visit our vocations website @ domcentral.org, or you can e-mail me if you’d like to know more.

Yours in Christ,

Br. James Dominic, OP
