Eucharistic Flashmob?

Dear Readers,

Fr. Z and some others have been discussing the merits of this Capuchin’s idea for a “Eucharistic flash mob”:

The idea seems valid to me in general, as the CFRs in NYC do similar things. The only reservation I have is that putting Jesus in a gym bag seems a bit incongruous, as well as being a fairly clear violation of good liturgical sense in regard to the Eucharist. I would also worry about disruptive activities by passers-by, but that is a lesser concern. It would probably be just as effective, certainly more reverent, and more useful for people to have a procession through the center of town, with maybe a station and preaching (and benediction?). Overall, I appreciate his initiative in attempting to have a public occasion for prayer and preaching – I think all religious, especially those orders like my own devoted to evangelization, need to engage in public preaching more (because not everybody comes to church!).

Yours in Christ,

Br. James Dominic, OP
